What Students Need to Know:

Preparation for an online speech is just as important as it is for an in-person speech. In addition to preparing the content for the presentation itself, is important to consider factors such as your surroundings and your equipment. The following resources provide information on how to best prepare for your upcoming presentation.

Best Practices:

When you are not actively presenting, be sure to keep your microphone muted.

If you need to share your screen with others, make sure that you are sharing the content you intended to show and not personal files.

If you are feeling nervous or uneasy about presenting, PRACTICE! This is the best way to familiarize yourself with your content and get comfortable along the way.

Important Factors:

When preparing for online delivery, there are several important factors to consider. First, you need to know whether your speech will be presented synchronously (live) or asynchronously (recorded). Next you will want to consider factors such as:

  • Eye contact
  • Lighting
  • Posture
  • Background
  • Movement and gestures
  • How to most effectively use your speaking notes

These tips are further outlined in the following handout: Online Delivery Speaking Tips
