Consideration For Speech Design

How Can I Set My Students Up for Success in the Organization of their Speeches?

  1. What do I want students to demonstrate that they know how to do as a result of completing this assignment?

  2. What is the students’ goal in giving this speech?  Are they explaining a complex idea to a non-expert audience?  Trying to persuade someone to change their attitudes, behaviors, or beliefs?  Trying to sell something?

  3. Have I discussed the norms that are expected in presentations for this particular context?  Are there time limits, expectations for elements that must be included in the speech, source citation guidelines, required patterns of organization, or other requirements that my students might not be aware of?

  4. Have I provided an example that shows students what a high-quality model of this presentation or outline might look like?

  5. Have I considered creating an assignment design template?
