What Students Need to Know:
Small group communication is a vital skill for students. It allows them to take ownership of the course material, work on their interpersonal communication skills, and learn how to work through conflicts. Most importantly, working in groups is reflective of what many students will experience in their careers.
- Students should agree on their overall goals for the assignment and how they will accomplish their goals with a written plan.
- Ask students to reflect on their own conflict management styles.
- Have students evaluate the other members of their group and their own performance.
Things to Consider:
When working as a group:
- Assign group roles
- Make sure transitions between speakers are clear and effective
- Be interested and engaged while your group members are presenting – nonverbal communication is important too!
- Play into each speaker’s strengths
